The Online Scientific Writing Workshop — 20-23 June 2022

Book your place now:
$500 (€370) per person

This workshop will change the way you think about writing.

We will teach you the skills for producing papers of the highest quality for the world’s top journals. But we will also show you why these skills work and how to apply them.

Once you’ve booked, we will ask you to complete a short abstract writing exercise and return it to us by 6 June. We’ll prepare detailed feedback on this work which we will give during a one-to-one tutorial.

A key part of our approach is to focus on the structure of good scientific communication. We examine this at every scale, from the level of sentences and paragraphs to abstracts and entire papers. We also showcase the techniques for presenting clear logical arguments and the skills needed to write and edit concise, emphatic sentences. Along the way, we’ll explore examples from a wide range of disciplines and journals.

Our belief is that practice is an essential part of learning so we have plenty of exercises to help you hone the skills you’ll be learning. Expect to work hard.

We’ll also be taking each of you aside towards the end of the course, to provide one-to-one feedback on your abstract exercises and to show you how to apply our ideas to your own writing. This is also a chance to raise your own questions with the instructors and seek advice.

The course runs over 4 half-days because you’ve told us that full days in front of a computer screen are too intense.

Workshop times: 8am to noon PT, 11am to 3pm ET, 4pm to 8pm BST, 5pm to 9pm CEST

Please feel free to distribute the course timetable to anybody you think might benefit.

But if you can’t make these dates, tell us and we’ll let you know about future workshops.

Our unique approach

This workshop is different from conventional MOOCs (massive open online courses) because it includes:

  • One-to-one feedback
Before the workshop we will ask you to complete a short abstract writing exercise. We will prepare detailed feedback on this work ahead of a one-to-one session with you during the course. This session gives you the opportunity to raise specific questions or seek advice from your instructor.
  • Small classes
Your class will have no more than 20 participants giving your the opportunity to ask questions and interact.
  • Experienced instructors
Write About Science has been giving scientific writing workshops at the world’s top institutions for over a decade. Your instructors are highly experienced and approachable.

Please read our terms and conditions.
